Discount break-even calculator

How many more orders a discount has to bring in to earn the profit you make at full price, with the formula shown.

Fill in the inputs, results compute live, formula included.
Why does a 10% discount need more than 10% more orders?

The discount comes out of your margin, not out of your price alone. At a 40% margin, 10% off leaves 30% on each order, so you need 10 ÷ 30 = 33% more orders to earn what you earned before.

What if the discount is as large as my margin?

Each discounted order then earns nothing, or loses money, so selling more of them cannot make up the difference. The calculator says so instead of printing a number.

Which margin should I enter?

Contribution margin: revenue minus product cost, shipping and payment fees, as a share of revenue. Gross margin leaves costs out and makes discounts look cheaper than they are.
